♥ Setting; This chapter takes place in Honduras, Guatemala in January 1989.

♥ This chapter is when Enrique was five years old living in Honduras with his mother. This is the beginning of Enrique’s story. In this section, Enrique is experiencing confusion because he senses a change with his mother. Little does he know, that his mother is about to leave illegally to the United States. Enrique starts to wonder why his mother has started acting different. But eventually his mother, Lourdes, says good bye to Enrique. She tells him that she will return to him and will only be gone for a little while. Lourdes expects only to be gone for a year, or less. But she thinks she might bring her children with her if she does not return because they are the only reason she is leaving. Enrique and his sister are left behind in Honduras with their grandma.
